The Ethiopian Community Development Council (ECDC) has offered a microenterprise program since 1992 when it received a $250,000 grant from the Office of Refugee Resettlement, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This program grew to include a variety of constituents and became the Enterprise Development Group (EDG) in 2000. Also in 2000, EDG established itself as a Community Development Financial Institution. The mission is to promote opportunities for self-sufficiency of low-to-moderate income people through sustainable economic and community development initiatives. EDG is the chief provider of the Small Business Association (SBA) Microloan Intermediary lender program in the metro D.C. region. |

New Visions, New ventures (NVNV) was formed as a nonprofit in 1998 to promote economic independence for low-income women.In 1999, the organization began implementing the From Prison to Entrepreneurship program, to reach incarcerated as well as community-based low-income women. The program was designed to promote economic independence for women in difficult life circumstances by providing opportunities for self-employment and microenterprise development. NVNV offers training, technical assistance, access to capital, follow-up assistance, and support services. |

People, Inc was formed to create economic opportunities for low- to moderate- income individuals and is a nonprofit corporation. In 1992, BusinesStart was formed to specifically focus on microenterprise development and self-employment in the region. Within the past 12 years, more than 180 businesses have started, expanded, or been retained as a result of this program. |
