FREE Capacity Building Workshops!!
A Stronger Community Begins With You!!
The Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), in collaboration with the Appalachian Regional Commission is offering a free capacity building workshop series to provide learning opportunities designed for community-based and nonprofit organizations.
Participants are encouraged to enroll in multiple workshops sessions designed to provide field-tested tools and concepts for immediate implementation.

Sept. 17:
Objectives of this workshop combines leading edge thinking with practical application to enhance the capacity of citizens to work effectively with a broad range of community issues. Students will gain understanding of board roles & legal responsibilities, learn the importance of having a strategic framework; learn effective board recruitment strategies, and successful board-staff relations. Participants will explore the nature of the partnerships between the board, chief executive, staff, and community.

Sept. 24:
This topic discusses the importance of having leader succession plan as a system for ensuring the agency is always prepared as it can be, in the event of a transition, sudden or otherwise. The role and work of the board changes and the risks and opportunities increase exponentially. Participants will learn the most common challenges board leaders face during transition. Activities will help board members and executive directors develop their agency’s succession plan so that their customers will continue to receive services even during times of change. In many cases the biggest challenge is to resist the pressure to act too quickly. Students will draft an emergency succession plan for their organization.
