HIV/AIDS Housing

The Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) program supports housing and other services for low-income persons with AIDS or HIV, and their families.

The program provides funding for acquisition, rehabilitation, new construction, leasing and operation of housing facilities, rental and mortgage assistance, utility payments, resource identification, technical assistance, and other supportive services.

The program is administered by eligible nonprofit organizations and governmental housing agencies.  These include local government housing agencies, public housing authorities, and governmental health and human service agencies that provide assistance for residential programs such as transitional drug and/or alcohol abuse treatment and counseling, or institutional care, including acute care and inpatient treatment.

Eligibility for family or individual assistance is determined through a pre-screening and application process by an AIDS Services Organization (ASO).  If you or someone you know could benefit from this program, please contact an ASO in your area. The ASO will help you determine eligibility and apply for the program.
