Homelessness to Homeownership

Homeless Outcomes Input Sessions
In July 2010, the Department of Housing and Community Development convened four meetings for stakeholders to provide input to the development of the forthcoming report by the Homeless Outcomes Advisory Committee that will be incorporated into the Commonwealth’s Housing Policy. Input sessions were held in Roanoke, Annandale, Midlothian and Newport News. Please see below under additional information.

The Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) is committed toward helping individuals and families achieve the dream of homeownership.  For some, the road toward homeownership and self-sufficiency may begin with homelessness, or the risk of becoming homeless.

DHCD meets these goals through programs designed to aid individuals and families currently residing in shelters to become self-sufficient, and through supporting shelter providers to ensure safety and continuous operations.  In addition to homelessness, DHCD also focuses on specific housing needs for individuals with HIV or AIDS.

To realize the dream of homeownership for many, DHCD focuses programs on developing affordable housing, and on providing finance and educational programs to help individuals and families navigate the course of purchasing their first home.
