Identifying Resources for Regional Development

DHCD works across the commonwealth to further regionally based efforts that enhance economic development opportunities, engage a broad-based stakeholder group and leverage a community’s unique assets. Below is a list of programs that may meet your needs.

Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)

Funding through the Virginia Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) may be used by eligible units of local government to target promote regional community development efforts. Potential activities include “seed” funding to support community organizing, regional needs assessments and asset-identification, along with implementation efforts to support projects and efforts that align with a regional vision.

Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC)

The focus of Virginia’s ARC program is fostering economic development and improving the quality of life for Appalachian citizens. The ARC seeks to build a strong and sustainable asset-based economy, bringing jobs and prosperity to Appalachian communities while preserving their character. Projects which address the leveraging of cultural, natural, community, structural and business assets, and which support regional efforts, are a priority for the program.

Building Collaborative Communities (BCC)

BCC is a new effort designed to assist regions in creating and sustaining new economic opportunities across Virginia. The program promotes regional economic collaborations in economically-distressed areas to stimulate job creation, economic development and build community capacity and leadership.
