DHCD leverages both state and federal resources to prevent households from becoming homeless and to assist households experiencing homelessness to quickly regain stability in permanent housing. DHCD supports coordinated community-based activities through grants to qualified nonprofits and units of local government. These grants support local programs and activities that are designed to reduce the number of homeless individuals and families, reduce the length of time that a household is homeless, and reduce the rate of households returning to homelessness.
DHCD supports local efforts through funding and technical support to community-based programs to assure that these efforts are:
- Well coordinated with other providers and resources
- Prepared to participate in a local coordinated or centralized intake
- Prepared to leverage community-based prevention resources
- Focused on quick transitions to housing
